Sun Spot & Age Spot Removal in Charlotte, NC

Personalized treatment for flat brown sun spots, age spots, freckles and visible photodamage using IPL/BBL photofacial, Q-Switch, ThermoClear and resurfacing options selected according to the type of pigment — not simply the color you see.

Those flat brown spots on the face, hands, chest and arms are often the visible result of years of cumulative UV exposure. Many are solar lentigines — commonly called sun spots or age spots — and they can respond very well to properly selected pigment treatment.

Brown Spot Treatment · Charlotte NC

The first question isn't “Which laser?” It's “What kind of spot is it?”

Solar lentigines, freckles, melasma, post-inflammatory pigment and raised benign lesions can all look brown — but they do not behave the same way and should not automatically receive the same treatment.

Solar Lentigines Charlotte NC

Sun Damage + Pigment

What Are Sun Spots and Age Spots?

Solar lentigines are flat, usually well-defined areas of increased pigmentation associated with cumulative sun exposure. They often appear gradually on chronically exposed areas such as the face, backs of the hands, chest, shoulders and arms.

They are commonly called sun spots, liver spots or age spots. They can range from light tan to dark brown and may become more noticeable as years of UV exposure accumulate.

The important part is that not every brown mark is a solar lentigo. Melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, freckles and raised lesions may require completely different treatment decisions.

Not Every Brown Spot Is the Same

What Kind of Pigmentation Do You Have?

Proper treatment starts by identifying the pattern rather than assuming all brown discoloration is “sun damage.”

Solar Lentigines

Sun Spots / Age Spots

Usually flat, discrete tan-to-brown spots on sun-exposed skin. These are among the most common targets for IPL, BBL, Q-Switch and selected pigment-specific treatment.

Freckles

Ephelides

Smaller pigmented spots that often have a genetic component and become darker with sun exposure. Treatment choice depends on skin tone, distribution and how readily they return with UV exposure.

Hormonal / Reactive Pigment

Melasma

Melasma often forms broader, symmetrical patches and behaves very differently from isolated solar lentigines. Heat and inflammation may worsen it in some patients, so it should not automatically be treated like an ordinary age spot.

After Inflammation

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

PIH develops after acne, irritation, injury or inflammation. Treating the original inflammatory trigger and respecting skin tone are often just as important as treating the visible pigment.

Raised / Textured

Seborrheic Keratosis & Other Benign Lesions

A brown lesion that is raised, rough or textural may not be a simple pigment spot. Selected benign superficial lesions may be appropriate for targeted treatment after assessment.

Needs Medical Evaluation

Changing or Suspicious Pigment

A new, changing, irregular, bleeding or diagnostically uncertain lesion should not simply be treated cosmetically. Medical evaluation may be recommended before any laser or light treatment.

Common Treatment Areas

Sun Spots on the Face, Hands, Chest & Arms

Solar lentigines tend to appear where the skin has accumulated the most ultraviolet exposure over time.

Face Cheeks, temples and forehead are common areas for discrete brown spots and broader photodamage.
Hands The backs of the hands often reveal years of sun exposure even when the face has been carefully protected.
Chest Décolleté sun damage frequently includes a combination of brown pigmentation and visible redness.
Arms Forearms can develop multiple lentigines after years of cumulative outdoor and driving exposure.
Shoulders Shoulders and upper back may show clusters of sun-related pigment after repeated recreational exposure.

Treatment Selection

Which Treatment Is Best for Sun Spots & Age Spots?

The best treatment depends on whether the pigment is isolated or diffuse, superficial or deeper, flat or raised — and whether redness, texture or broader photoaging is present at the same time.

01

IPL / BBL Photofacial

Modern Skin Clinic offers both Lumenis Stellar M22 IPL and Sciton BBL for light-based photofacial treatment. These are especially useful when sun damage includes multiple superficial brown spots, freckles, uneven tone, redness or mixed red-and-brown photodamage across a larger area.

You do not need to choose between IPL and BBL yourself. The technology can be selected according to the pigment, associated redness, skin tone and treatment goal.

02

Q-Switch Nd:YAG

Q-Switch is a more focused pigment strategy that may be selected for discrete unwanted brown pigmentation when treating the entire complexion with IPL or BBL is unnecessary.

Explore Q-Switch Nd:YAG →
03

755 nm Alexandrite

The 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength has strong melanin absorption and can be useful for selected benign superficial pigmented lesions in appropriate skin types. Treatment suitability depends on pigment characteristics and surrounding skin tone.

04

ThermoClear

ThermoClear is useful when the concern is a selected small superficial or slightly raised benign skin imperfection rather than diffuse pigmentation requiring full-face light treatment.

05

CoolPeel CO₂

CoolPeel makes more sense when sun damage is part of a larger photoaging picture that also includes rough texture, fine lines or dull surface quality — not simply one isolated brown spot.

06

Chemical Peels

Professional chemical peels can help when pigmentation is more diffuse and superficial or when overall uneven tone and surface texture need improvement at the same time.

A Crucial Distinction

Sun Spots vs. Melasma: Why We Treat Them Differently

An isolated sun spot and melasma may both look brown, but they do not behave the same way. Solar lentigines are usually discrete areas of UV-related pigment. Melasma is often broader, symmetrical and more biologically reactive.

Light and laser treatments can be very effective for sun spots. Melasma requires more caution because heat and inflammation can sometimes contribute to rebound pigment or worsening.

Not every brown spot should be treated with IPL.
  • Discrete sun spots may be excellent light/laser targets.
  • Melasma requires pigment control and careful trigger management.
  • PIH should be treated with respect for the original inflammation.
  • Raised lesions need a different assessment from flat pigment.
  • Suspicious lesions should be medically evaluated before cosmetic treatment.

What Happens Next?

What Happens to Brown Spots After IPL, BBL or Laser?

Recovery depends on the device, settings and individual pigment, but superficial sun-related pigment often follows a predictable visible renewal pattern.

01

Temporary Darkening

Treated brown pigment may become darker or more noticeable soon after treatment.

02

Dry / Coffee-Ground Appearance

Some superficial pigment can develop a dry, darker, coffee-ground-like appearance during early healing.

03

Natural Shedding

Allow treated pigment to exfoliate naturally. Picking, scrubbing or forcing it off can interfere with healing.

04

Photoprotection

Daily broad-spectrum SPF and sun avoidance reduce unnecessary post-treatment pigment stimulation and help preserve results.

Treatment Planning

One Spot Is Different From Fifty

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments depends on how many spots are present, pigment depth, skin tone, treatment technology and how the pigment responds. Some discrete superficial spots respond quickly, while broader photodamage may benefit from a treatment series.

The treatment plan can also change as the skin clears. Once the darkest pigment improves, the next priority may be redness, texture, fine lines or prevention rather than continuing to target the same spots indefinitely.

New sun spots can develop over time because cosmetic treatment does not erase a lifetime of UV exposure or eliminate future sun exposure.

Preserve the Result

Home Care After Sun Spot Removal

Procedures remove or reduce visible pigment; daily skincare helps reduce the conditions that make photodamage become visible again.

Broad-Spectrum SPF

Consistent UVA/UVB protection is the foundation. Reapplication and physical sun avoidance matter when exposure is significant.

Vitamin C

Antioxidant vitamin C can support a brighter, more even-looking complexion while helping address oxidative stress from environmental exposure.

Retinoids

Retinol or prescription tretinoin may support turnover and photoaging correction once skin has recovered and the regimen is appropriate.

Pigment Correctors

Selected pigment-regulating products may be used when diffuse uneven tone persists beyond the isolated spots being treated.

Before We Remove It

Sometimes the Right Treatment Is Not a Laser

Cosmetic pigment treatment should only be performed when the lesion is appropriate for aesthetic treatment. If a spot is changing or its diagnosis is uncertain, medical evaluation can be more important than cosmetic removal.

We may recommend dermatology evaluation before treatment when the appearance or history of a lesion raises concern.

Have It Checked First If It Is:

  • New and changing quickly
  • Asymmetrical or unusually irregular
  • Multicolored or exceptionally dark
  • Bleeding without clear trauma
  • Repeatedly crusting or ulcerating
  • Growing or changing in texture
  • Different from the other spots around it
  • Clinically uncertain during assessment

Experience Matters

More Than One Pigment Technology Means Better Treatment Selection

Nina Crytser has worked in medical aesthetics since 2003 and has experience with IPL, BBL, Q-Switch, laser-based pigment treatments, ThermoClear, chemical peels and resurfacing technologies.

That matters because the best approach to a few discrete spots on the hand may be completely different from the best approach to diffuse photodamage across the face and chest.

The goal is not to choose the most aggressive machine. It is to identify the target, choose the technology that matches it and avoid treating pigment that should be managed differently.

“Before I decide how to treat a brown spot, I want to understand what kind of brown spot I am looking at.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Sun Spot & Age Spot Removal FAQs

What is the best treatment for sun spots?
The best treatment depends on the type, number and distribution of the spots. IPL or BBL may work well for broader superficial photodamage, while Q-Switch or another targeted approach may make more sense for selected individual pigmented lesions.
What is the best treatment for age spots on the hands?
Flat sun-related age spots on the backs of the hands may respond to light-based or targeted pigment treatment. IPL, BBL or Q-Switch may be considered depending on the number of spots, skin tone and whether the surrounding skin also shows broader photodamage.
Are age spots and sun spots the same thing?
The terms are often used interchangeably for solar lentigines — flat areas of increased pigmentation associated with cumulative ultraviolet exposure.
What is the difference between a sun spot and melasma?
Sun spots are usually discrete areas of UV-related pigment. Melasma more often appears as broader, often symmetrical patches influenced by light exposure, hormones and pigment reactivity. Melasma requires more caution with heat- and light-based procedures.
Is IPL or BBL better for brown spots?
Neither is automatically better for every patient. Both can target selected brown pigmentation and photodamage. The appropriate platform depends on the type and distribution of pigment, associated redness, skin tone and treatment goals.
When is Q-Switch better than IPL for a brown spot?
Q-Switch may be selected when the goal is more focused treatment of selected unwanted pigment rather than full-field photorejuvenation. IPL or BBL may be more useful when pigmentation is diffuse or occurs together with redness.
Why do brown spots get darker after IPL or BBL?
Selected superficial pigment often temporarily darkens after light-based treatment. It may look dry or coffee-ground-like before naturally exfoliating and becoming less noticeable.
Should I scrub the dark spots off after IPL?
No. Treated pigment should be allowed to exfoliate naturally. Picking, scrubbing or aggressively exfoliating the area can disrupt healing and increase irritation.
How many treatments does it take to remove sun spots?
Treatment number varies according to pigment depth, number of spots, treatment technology and skin response. Some discrete spots respond quickly, while broader photodamage may benefit from a series.
Can sun spots come back after treatment?
Successfully treated pigment may remain improved, but new sun spots can develop with continued ultraviolet exposure and aging. Daily photoprotection and maintenance skincare help preserve results.
Can a brown spot be skin cancer?
Some skin cancers and atypical lesions can resemble benign brown spots. A lesion that is new, changing, irregular, bleeding, multicolored or clinically uncertain should be medically evaluated rather than simply treated cosmetically.
Can CoolPeel remove sun damage?
CoolPeel may improve broader photoaging, surface texture, fine lines and selected sun-related pigmentation. It is generally more useful when pigment is part of a larger resurfacing concern rather than one isolated brown spot.
Do chemical peels help sun spots?
Professional chemical peels may improve diffuse superficial pigmentation and uneven tone. The best peel depends on pigment type, skin tone, sensitivity and desired downtime.

I've always assumed I'd have to endure acne issues for the rest of my life. I'm in my early twenties and have had terrible acne for as long as I can remember. I've gone to every dermatologist in Charlotte, and after just one treatment with Nina, I began to see results. My skin has been a never-ending battle up until I started going here. It's affordable (I'm job hunting and can still manage coming here once a month), and it works like magic. I've had tiny acne bumps and constant painful breakouts all over my face for as long as I can remember, and not one doctor has been able to alleviate them or make them go away altogether. Nina can take each patient and customize their treatments, so there's a guarantee there are results. I wear my hair back and haven't touched my makeup drawer since my first treatment.
